Is dating while travelling a good idea?

Dating while travelling has always been seen as something foolish, but at the end of the day, it depends what you are looking to get out of it. If you are looking for Mr or Mrs Right and to settle down in the short term, then no, it’s not a good idea for you. If however you are looking for some adult dating and some fun, then yes, it can be a great idea. It can also allow you to meet people from different cultures and nations that you may never normally encounter. Saying that, just make sure that you respect local customs and traditions (as well as laws). This is particularly relevant in places like the United Arab Emirates.

When we are away from home, it can sometimes seem like we are free to be someone else. Someone carefree and free of responsibilities. If no strings dating is what you are looking for, then this can sometimes be a great time to pursue that.

I know so many people who’ve tried it whilst at home, and they’ve had a great time, but down the line things have gotten complicated and they end up being awkward and embarrassed when they bump into the person. Trying dating when travelling or even just away from home can mean you can meet people who you are far less likely to end up running into down the line.

The dating rules apply wherever and whenever you are dating though! You need to stay safe and be careful! Some of the most important ones are:

  • make sure someone knows who you are meeting.
  • make sure someone knows where you are going and what time you are expected back. You should agree a time with them that you need to check in with them by otherwise they will be calling you and checking in on you.
  • ensure that your mobile phone is fully charged in case of emergency.
  • hide some cash somewhere e.g. in a shoe so that if you need to jump in a cab you still can if something should happen to your purse or handbag.
  • never leave your food or drink unattended.
  • never meet someone in a secluded or private space.
  • should the date progress, make sure you are going somewhere you know and feel comfortable.
  • condoms are a must – I shouldn’t need to say that, but in the heat of the moment, don’t forget. Some people judge women for carrying them, but at the end of the day you are only looking after your health so let them judge away!

At the end of the day, your dating life is no-one’s business but your own. You have to do what feels right for you, at home and when away travelling or on holiday. Don’t let others judge you or pressure you into doing things that you don’t feel comfortable with and most importantly (after your safety of course) try and have fun! To be honest – that applies to all areas of your life so get out there and get dating as well as living!
